Loosing Faith In The System

So here is a wonderful little interview of Congressman Louie Gohmert (R-Texas) by Anderson Cooper. One of my favorite reporters, (as a matter of fact my only favorite reporter) who is famous for both his heroism as well as his ability to get to the real issue at hand.

So when I call this a “wonderful little interview” I mean it in a “what the hell did I just see” kind of way. This man is the face of the current republican party. Take a nice hard look. Gohmert jabbers like an idiot about “terror babies” getting into the US via birthing tourism, citing an unnamed source in the FBI. When asked, Gohmert just repeats his canned one liner and continues to jabber and interrupt Anderson Cooper.

Honestly, I never thought I’d loose faith in the United States, but I’m beginning to wonder if there are intelligent people on either side of the fence. Or if there is even a fence at all. How do people like Gohmert get into our government to begin with? I’m positive that this stupidity crosses party lines, I saw it back in Bush’s second term with the impossible bungling of the Kerry v Bush election. Hell, look at the link I provided about Cooper during Katrina. That senator was a Democrat. I don’t think this is about party lines anymore. Current American Politics seems to be geared towards currying the favor of lobbyist groups and good ‘ole boys to secure positions of power and to have “careers”. How else could an idiot like this come to power? Uneducated voters? No… Even an uneducated voter would have seen this fool for what he is. This man got into his position by winning favors, buying votes by swearing allegiances, be they unions or lobbyist groups. The unions and lobbyist groups are the ones that get the votes in order. In Texas, you vote for Gohmert because he’s bought your vote from the mechanics union, or what have you, because “What’s good for the union is what’s good for you”. Right?

If things can only get done by currying favor with these Washington elite, count me out. Maybe it’s the Atlas Shrugged part of me talking, but the job of the government should be protecting the people in a minimalist fashion and getting out of the way. Douglas Adams had a great quote about the current state of things:

Anyone who is capable of getting themselves made President should on no account be allowed to do the job.
Douglas Adams, The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy
English humorist & science fiction novelist (1952 – 2001)

Maybe we should just go Fight Club on the whole thing. I am Jack’s raging bile duct.
